I-AIIG Visits Global Public Policy Institute

July 2, 2026

On July 2, 2026, a delegation from Tsinghua University’s Institute for Artificial Intelligence International Governance (I-AIIG) visited the Global Public Policy Institute (GPPi) in Berlin. The I-AIIG delegation included Research Fellows Wang Jingyu, Sheng Shuyang, and Song Yuxin, along with Chen Fan, Foreign Affairs Assistant. The GPPi team was represented by Co-founder and Director Thorsten Benner; Head of the Political Economy Jakob Hensing; Research Associate Florian Klumpp; Head of Global Dialogue & Facilitation Joel Sandhu; and Non-Resident Fellows Jessica Batke and Olaf Schulz. The two sides held in-depth discussions on global AI governance trends, balancing AI innovation with effective oversight, multilateral cooperation mechanisms, and the role of international think tanks.

GPPi is an independent, non-profit think tank based in Berlin, known for its research on global governance, digital policy, international security, technology policy, and AI governance. GPPi actively contributes to policy discussions at the United Nations (UN) and other multilateral platforms.

The I-AIIG delegation shared recent developments from Tsinghua’s research on global AI governance, digital governance, and international cooperation. They highlighted their role in several upcoming initiatives, including an official side event at the Global Dialogue on AI Governance at the UN Headquarters; a session titled “Safe at Scale: Translating the UN Automated Driving Systems (ADS) Regulation into Global Action” at the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS); and the International AI Cooperation and Governance Forum 2026, scheduled for November in Hong Kong.

During the exchanges, both sides presented their latest research. I-AIIG provided an update on the National AI Capability Index, AI risk classification and governance mechanisms, AI’s implications for soft power, and engagement with the UN. GPPi offered insights into its work on global governance, digital policy, emerging technologies, and European policy perspectives on AI governance.

The two sides agreed on the importance of ongoing international dialogue and collaboration. They expressed mutual interest in deepening exchanges through joint research, academic events, and think tank partnerships, thereby contributing to an open and responsible global AI governance framework.
