On January 8, 2025, Lord Tim Clement-Jones of the House of Lords led a British delegation to Tsinghua University’s Institute for AI International Governance (I-AIIG). The delegation participated in a roundtable discussion with Chinese experts and researchers, focusing on AI safety, Chinese and British approaches, and international cooperation.
Ms. Xiao Qian, Vice Dean of I-AIIG, welcomed the delegation on behalf of the institute. Professor Liang Zheng, Vice Dean of I-AIIG, moderated the discussion on key issues, including balancing innovation and regulation, addressing risks of emerging technologies, and fostering global collaboration in AI governance.
Lord Tim Clement-Jones emphasized the UK’s dedication to international partnerships in AI governance. “AI governance must address not just technical risks but also societal demands for transparency, inclusivity, and accountability. Collaboration between countries like the UK and China is vital to shaping a future-oriented governance framework,” he said.
Chloe Smith, Strategic Advisor at PA Consulting, highlighted the importance of proportionate regulation. “Balancing innovation with the need for responsible governance is one of the greatest challenges policymakers face. It’s essential that we ensure AI technologies are both transformative and safe,” she said.
Participants included experts and representatives from Tsinghua University’s School of Public Policy and Management, the Institute for Studies on Artificial Intelligence and Law, Schwarzman College, and I-AIIG’s research team.
