Chulalongkorn University delegation visited the Institute for AI International Governance (I-AIIG) of Tsinghua University on November 1, 2024. The visitors were welcomed by Dean Zhu Xufeng of Tsinghua’s School of Public Policy and Management. I-AIIG Vice Dean Liang Zheng moderated the discussion meeting.

“We are excited to welcome our colleagues from Chulalongkorn University and explore ways AI can support education and policy frameworks internationally,” said Vice Dean Liang Zheng as he opened the session. “At Tsinghua, we see AI research as a bridge connecting science, society, and governance, and we value partnerships that help propel these efforts forward on a global scale.”

Professor Shen Yang, who holds joint appointments in the School of Journalism and Communication and College of AI, showcased recent AI research achievements from his lab, focusing on generative AI’s potential in various fields, including cultural promotion and educational tools. “Our AI technologies are designed not only to innovate but also to integrate with cultural and societal needs,” he explained. Professor Shen demonstrated several AI-generated music pieces and digital art, describing how such technologies can enhance cultural preservation and educational engagement.

Chulalongkorn University President Wilert Puriwat expressed strong interest in potential collaborations, especially in leveraging AI to address societal challenges and enhance educational practices in Thailand. “AI is not just a tool but a transformative force for education and economic development,” he remarked. “We look forward to  working with Tsinghua to drive digital innovation that benefits both China and Thailand, particularly as we approach the 50th anniversary of our diplomatic relations next year.”

I-AIIG extended an invitation to Chulalongkorn University to participate in the upcoming International AI Cooperation and Governance Forum 2024, scheduled for December 2-3 at the National University of Singapore. The forum, jointly organized by Tsinghua, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, and the National University of Singapore, aims to foster cross-border dialogue on AI governance.

“We hope that this forum will provide a meaningful space for international experts to collectively shape the future of responsible AI development,” Vice Dean Liang said in his closing remarks.
