Tsinghua University’s Institute for AI International Governance (I-AIIG) hosted a UK-China lunch meeting on January 14, 2025. Discussions covered topics such as balancing innovation and regulation, addressing safety and ethical concerns, and fostering global collaboration in the field of artificial intelligence (AI). The British delegation, led by Mr. Chris Jones, a senior representative from the UK’s Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT), joined Chinese researchers and officials in a dynamic exchange of perspectives.
Professor Xue Lan, Dean of I-AIIG, welcomed the delegation, stating, “International cooperation is crucial in addressing AI’s global challenges. We must work together to build consensus on critical issues, including establishing common safety standards.”
Professor Liang Zheng outlined China’s approach to AI governance: “China is progressing from principles to concrete regulations, seeking a balance between fostering technological innovation and risk mitigation in emerging technologies.”
Emphasizing the UK’s commitment to AI safety, Mr. Chris Jones advocated for a measured regulatory development that supports both innovation and precautionary measures. He noted, “Collaboration between the UK and China is essential to developing robust frameworks that manage risks while maximizing AI’s transformative potential.”
The discussions explored ethical and privacy concerns, with Ms. Zhu Meng, Partner and Senior Vice President at RealAI, presenting innovative systems for deepfake detection and data protection. These contributions highlighted both nations’ commitment to responsible AI development.
The meeting included experts and representatives from Tsinghua University’s School of Public Policy and Management, School of Law, Center for International Security And Strategy, and I-AIIG’s research team.
