Turing Award Recipient Martin Hellman Visits Tsinghua’s I-AIIG

On October 24, 2024, Turing Award laureate Martin Hellman visited Tsinghua Universitys Institute for AI International Governance (I-AIIG). During his visit, Dr.  Hellman and I-AIIG’s researchers held a fruitful discussion on AI governance and international security. Xue Lan, Dean of I-AIIG, moderated the meeting.


As part of his visit, Dr. Hellman delivered a lecture titled Open Science, highlighting the importance of international cooperation in science. He emphasized that technological advancements quickly spread across borders, arguing that genuine security is only achievable through broader international collaboration. Hellman also discussed artificial intelligence’s impact on global security, particularly in the field of cybersecurity, noting that national security is inextricably linked to global security when facing shared challenges.


Fu Ying, Honorary Dean of I-AIIG, underscored the international community’s necessity to strengthen multilateral cooperation in addressing AI-related challenges, calling for the establishment of a multi-stakeholder, globally inclusive governance framework.


Dean Xue Lan highlighted I-AIIGs role in shaping AI policy and discussed the upcoming International AI Cooperation and Governance Forum 2024.” The forum, co-hosted by Tsinghua University, the National University of Singapore, and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, will take place on December 2-3, 2024, at the National University of Singapore. Xue highlighted that the forum will create an opportunity to foster greater international collaboration among scholars and institutions, advancing the development of AI governance frameworks.
