UN Secretary-General's Envoy on Technology Amandeep Singh Gill Visits Institute for AI International Governance of Tsinghua University

On April 9, Amandeep Singh Gill, the United Nations Secretary-General’s Envoy on Technology, visited the Institute for AI International Governance of Tsinghua University. The meeting was chaired by Xiao Qian, Vice Dean of the Institute.


Vice Dean Liang Zheng warmly welcomed Mr. Gill and his delegation, highlighting China’s proactive efforts in AI governance. He noted that China has made significant strides in establishing a systematic governance framework and has been pioneering innovative practices in generative AI governance, offering valuable insights for other countries. Liang emphasized that China adheres to the principle of “people-centered, AI-for-good” and has issued various proposals, initiatives, and position papers. China is actively participating in and promoting the construction and rule-making of international AI governance mechanisms within the UN framework, with a focus on ensuring that AI serves the well-being of all humanity and contributes to sustainable development. The Institute has also established the “International Forum on AI Cooperation and Governance,” an internationally recognized platform for multi-stakeholder engagement, and looks forward to continuing its collaboration with relevant UN bodies to advance global dialogue and cooperation on AI governance.


In his concluding remarks, Mr. Gill noted that many countries are now rolling out policies and measures for AI and data governance, and the United Nations is committed to promoting policy coordination, with international dialogue being the key. He emphasized that AI technology has the potential to empower sustainable development, and the next crucial step is to maximize AI's role in achieving these goals. This will require enhanced communication among stakeholders and the creation of spaces and platforms for international cooperation.


The meeting was also attended by representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Science and Technology, as well as members of the Institute’s research team.
