On February 26, 2025, a delegation from the UK Youth Diplomatic Corps visited the Institute for AI International Governance of Tsinghua University (I-AIIG) for a productive exchange on international AI governance. Xiao Qian, Vice Dean of I-AIIG, welcomed the delegation.

Xiao Qian opened the meeting by extending a warm welcome to the UK delegation. After a round of introductions, she provided an overview of I-AIIG’s mission and achievements in the field of AI governance. “Our institute is committed to fostering healthy AI development, promoting international cooperation, and contributing to global AI governance,” said Xiao. She emphasized I-AIIG’s focus on advancing collaborative research and policymaking to ensure AI’s positive impact worldwide.
The discussion then covered a range of topics, with both sides offering insights on China’s recent initiatives, AI policies, high-tech innovations, China-UK relations, climate change, and country-specific research. Xiao elaborated on China’s strategic approach to AI, highlighting the nation’s proactive efforts in fostering AI innovation and adopting regulatory measures to ensure safe, reliable AI development. “China has made significant strides in AI technology, with robust policies in place to oversee its secure application and integration,” she noted.
The UK delegation members shared their experiences and policy frameworks related to AI governance in the UK. Both sides engaged in a thorough discussion on strengthening international collaboration in the AI space, particularly in the context of the ongoing global digital transformation. The consensus was clear: “Given the shared global interests between China and the UK in regards to AI governance, there is a significant opportunity for us to collaborate further in driving international cooperation,” said Xiao.
Both parties agreed that the evolving digital landscape presents a chance for both countries to collaborate on AI governance and contribute to mutual development and global progress.
The event concluded with both sides expressing a strong commitment to future cooperation, recognizing the growing importance of AI in global governance and the need for ongoing dialogue between China and the UK on the subject.
