On June 9, 2023, Stuart Russell, Professor of Computer Sciences at the University of California, Berkeley, academic member of the Institute for AI International Governance of Tsinghua University (I-AIIG), and leading AI expert, visited Tsinghua University. Professor Russell and I-AIIG’s AI experts and students had a fruitful exchange on the challenges of generative AI and international governance. Liang Zheng, Vice Dean of I-AIIG, moderated the discussion meeting.
Xiao Qian, Vice Dean of I-AIIG, welcomed Professor Russell’s visit and introduced the institute’s recent research and academic activities. Xiao pointed out that I-AIIG hoped to strengthen international exchange and cooperation in the AI field. She invited Professor Russell to join the International AI Cooperation and Governance Forum 2023 hosted by Tsinghua University and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology in December. “Joint efforts are essential to promote responsible AI development,” Xiao added.
Professor Russell expressed his delight in visiting Tsinghua and thanked I-AIIG for the invitation. His opinion on using an AI system that empowers people is to build a robust AI governance framework. However, under the current circumstances, AI technology developers and researchers still lack sufficient policy-making and supervision experience. “To build a robust and adapt AI governance framework, the key is to clarify the ultimatum goal of technology supervision,” he said. Professor Russell also urged to ensure smooth international communication and cooperation in developing the framework, which should be based on a global mindset and with a clear goal.
