Amandeep Singh Gill, Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN) and Envoy on Technology, visited Tsinghua University on the afternoon of April 9. Yang Bin, Vice President of Tsinghua University, met with his delegation at Gong Zi Ting. They exchanged views on AI-enabled education and AI ethics and governance.
Yang welcomed Gill and his delegation and emphasized Tsinghua’s commitment to scientific research, technological innovation, technology governance, and ethical education in AI. In 2024, Tsinghua will launch over 100 courses on AI-enabled education, providing AI assistants and knowledge mapping to enrich diverse classroom scenarios and improve the efficiency and quality of teaching. In recent years, Tsinghua has established several prominent institutes, including the Institute for Artificial Intelligence, the Institute for AI International Governance (I-AIIG), and the Institute for AI Industry Research. Tsinghua has also launched the International AI Cooperation and Governance Forum, which serves as an international communication platform with multi-stakeholder participation. The Forum has enjoyed ongoing support from the UN agencies. Yang conveyed that Tsinghua is willing to communicate closely with UN agencies to jointly promote sustainable development with AI technology.
Gill expressed congratulations on Tsinghua’s recent achievements. He noted that Generative AI provides opportunities for global education and is driving a revolution in talent cultivation and scientific research paradigms in universities. Gill was delighted to witness Tsinghua’s forward deployment of AI-enabled education and AI ethics and governance research. He hopes to strengthen communication and cooperation with Tsinghua in AI, working together to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.
