New Zealand Embassy Visits I-AIIG

On Dec. 10, 2025, a delegation from the New Zealand Embassy, led by Ms. Alexandra Smithyman, Deputy Head of Mission, and Mr. Aramiro Tai Rākena (Ara), Counsellor for Trade, Economy, and Environment, visited Tsinghua University’s Institute for AI International Governance (I-AIIG), where they were welcomed by Professor Liang Zheng, Vice Dean of I-AIIG, and members of I-AIIG’s research team.


Their discussions centered on global technology trends, the evolving digital economy, and critical issues in AI governance. Professor Liang provided an overview of China’s approach to AI innovation and industrial applications, as well as its engagement in global governance dialogues, citing examples of I-AIIG’s international research partnerships. Ms. Alexandra Smithyman and Mr. Aramiro Tai Rākena also shared insights into New Zealand’s technology sector priorities and activities. Both sides acknowledged the potential for further collaboration, noting the complementary strengths of both countries in science, technology, and digital innovation.


“International dialogue and cooperation are essential to navigating the opportunities and challenges presented by AI,” said Ms. Alexandra Smithyman. Professor Liang Zheng echoed this sentiment, stating, “Collaborative research and open exchange of ideas are the foundation of effective global AI governance. We look forward to building practical partnerships that contribute to trustworthy AI innovation for the benefit of all.”
