Sean S. Ó hÉigeartaigh Visits I-AIIG

On November 16, 2023, Sean S. Ó hÉigeartaigh, Founding Executive Director of the Centre for the Study of Existential Risk at the University of Cambridge visited the Institute for AI International Governance (I-AIIG) at Tsinghua University.

Liang Zheng, Vice Dean of I-AIIG, underscored AI governance as a global issue and asserted the need for in-depth dialogue and collaboration among international academia, industry, and policy and standard-setting institutions. Zheng provided insights into I-AIIG’s efforts to foster international exchanges and cooperation on AI, including establishing the International AI Cooperation and Governance Forum as an international platform for dialogues involving multiple stakeholders. He also extended an invitation for deeper collaboration with the Centre for the Study of Existential Risk at the University of Cambridge at the International AI Cooperation and Governance Forum 2023, hosted by Tsinghua University and The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) on December 8-9 and held at HKUST.

Sean expressed his pleasure in visiting I-AIIG and his gratitude for the invitation to participate in the International AI Cooperation and Governance Forum 2023. He acknowledged China’s importance in promoting AI governance and stressed the need for deeper cooperation between Eastern and Western nations to promote tech for good in addressing the complex global agenda of AI governance. He viewed the Forum as an excellent means of facilitating dialogue between Eastern and Western countries while expressing his willingness to develop further collaboration efforts with I-AIIG.

The event also saw the participation of Zhu Xufeng, Dean of the School of Public Policy and Management at Tsinghua University; Huang Minlie, Professor of the Department of Computer Science and Technology at Tsinghua University; and representatives from Concordia AI.
