Representatives of the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Beijing visited the Institute for AI International Governance (I-AIIG) of Tsinghua University on 20th April.
The embassy pays a close attention to the progress in the field of artificial intelligence(AI) governance. “The uses of AI in contributing social development have been witnessed. Despite the many benefits AI brings, formidably, AI can scale up bias, exclusion, and discrimination,” said Stephanie de Ridder, first secretary and deputy head of the political department at the Netherlands Embassy in Beijing, “We need international and national policies and regulatory frameworks to ensure that these emerging technologies benefit humanity as a whole.”
On 24th November 2021, the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) presented the Recommendation on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence. In a statement, UNESCO said that there are several benefits from the use of AI but also challenges. The recommendation defines common values and principles that will guide the construction of the necessary legal infrastructure to ensure the healthy development of AI.
“This is a healthy sign and something we can generally herald and cherish,” said Luuk Hoefsloot, deputy head of the Economic Section at the Netherlands Embassy, “It is also urgent to set up an inclusive dialogue platform and facilitate international cooperation in AI governance.”
Last year, Tsinghua University cooperated with the United Nation Development Programme (UNDP) successfully held the 2021 AI International Cooperation and Governance Forum, which convened thought leaders and practitioners from across the world. The forum advanced the global conversation around the equitable use of AI, and examined AI’s role in international cooperation and sustainable development. LIANG Zheng, vice dean of I-AIIG reflected that “In the future, a multilateral and multi-stakeholder global platform is needed to build a balanced and inclusive AI governance system.”
International cooperation on a balanced and inclusive AI governance system are critical to ensuring that the development of AI helps build a sustainable future. “The healthy development of AI needs multi-stakeholders' efforts in building mutual trust and collaboration.” concluded by XIAO Qian, vice dean of I-AIIG.
